I love animals, and I admire snakes, although I’m not sure about owning one?

I went to the pet store the other day, and watched two beautiful baby ball pythons. The information said that they are very docile, and good starter snakes for beginners. I know basics about their care, but is there anything I should really know before considering getting one? I know they can get pretty big. Are they expensive to keep? Do any snake owners out there is Yahoo! Answers Land have any stories / advice for me? Thanks!

Well, you really could not have chosen a better snake. Though how docile the animal is depends on the specific individual, Ball pythons are very nice snakes. I volunteer at our zoo and we have 4 Ball pythons which are calm enough to be taken out and be touched by lots of kids. Great snakes.
Anyways. Here are some main things that you need to think of…
-First, Juveniles tend to be more aggressive at first, but typically calm down as they get used to human contact.
-Nocturnal. Eats in late evening – once a week.
-Needs a hide box or shelter.
-Longevity is 20-40 years. Yeah, they can get old and are a big commitment.
-Learn about their 'blue' state. All snakes go through this cycle. It is where their skin turns 'milky' or 'cloudy' and their eyes can actually appear blue. This means that they are getting ready to shed. NEVER, unless absolutely necessary, touch or handle a blue snake. It's comparable to giving someone a big hug while they have horrible sunburn and cannot see.

Good luck.
