Approximately 2700, out of this #, roughly 375 are poinsonous. Also there are (0) snakes native in New Zealand (the climate just won't support them there apparently). Now I wish I could tell you I just knew all of this out of the blue, but I watched a program on the Discovery Channel a few days ago and this was some of the information that they presented on TV.
