Corn Snakes?

Hi my cousin is offering me a corn snake. I have wanted one for ages and this is a life long dream (I know im only 14 but…). Anyway he said that she is about 10 weeks old at the moment. What is the average length for a corn snake for that age. He said that she is about 20 inches long. Is she growing like she should? I would also like any additional information about corn snakes and if they have any bad habts that I should watch ot for. Also if I could ask if calorina corn snakes are the best (thats the type he is offering). Thank you for any information. thank you

Well, corn snakes and king snakes alike do musk when they are scared, meaning they poo a little on you. When they are young they are more likely to crawl around and try to get a way. The size sounds proper and it should be eating pinkies. Baby mice. Baby baby mice.

If you want it make sure you study it before getting it.

Temps ahould be about 80-85 warm side, thats a heat lamp and heating pad. Heat lamp over the tank out side, heat pad outside on the bottom or side of the tank. A hide for both sides hot and cool so when it wants to cool down it moves into the other hide. A water bowl about in the middle just big enough for it to crawl into but watch out for soaking because it is one sign of mites. I like using the blocks of bark that you soak in water and it expands because it holds moiture, is easy to clean, you don't have to replace it often, and your snake will like to burrow in it.

Some snakes do that a lot even when they have lots of hides. So don't worry about upsetting the burrows when taking it out, It'll make new ones.

Also you will want to feed it outside of the tank so it does not associate you picking it up as feeding time and it bites. It happens so you want to stay on the safe side and have a box with a lid or even a clear plastic bin will holes drilled in the top that latches closed so you can make sure it eats. Let it settle and put him back. Don't handle him after he eats because if he gets stressed he will throw it back up and it does not smell nice.

When he is young and small you can feed him once a week, as he gets older and longer but not bigger in girth you can feed him 2 pinkies in one sitting or twice a week. As the food gets bigger you will feed less often.

You will want to get a branch to help him when he sheds as he is young and can shed often depending on how you feed him. If you use one from outside you want to wash it with bleach and dry it. But you can also back it 500 for a bit to kill everything on it. If the snake is captive bred then it won't have the same immunities as a wild caught snake.
